A Message From Ken Leebow

In 1997, I wrote my first book about the Internet -- 300 Incredible Things to Do on the Internet. My timing was right and fortunately, to date, I have sold over 3-million books. Now, you can enjoy the latest installment online. This version allows me to add online video, cartoons, and interesting quotes. Pretty soon, you'll be saying: "That's incredible!" Enjoy the journey.

P.S. In addition to writing, during the year, I give many keynote speeches about the Internet. If you need a speaker for a meeting, take a look at my speaker information.

2:) Create Your Own Search Engine

http://www.rollyo.com
Let’s face it: You’ve always thought you could create a better mousetrap. Or in this case, a better search engine. Here’s your chance to create your very own search engine. Go ahead. It’s easy and you'll enjoy the results.

Scott McNealy's Wisdom

“When computers (people) are networked, their power multiplies geometrically. Not only can people share all that information inside their machines, but they can reach out and instantly tap the power of other machines (people), essentially making the entire network their computer.”

In 1996, Scott McNealy, former CEO of Sun Microsystems, made that observation. Way back then, that's what got me excited about the Internet. By the way, I think the Internet revolution is about people. So, I inserted the word "people" when he mentioned computer/machines.

3:) Encyclopedia Wikipedia

Wikipedia's mission: "Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s what we’re doing."

With over 2-million articles, it’s the largest encyclopedia in the world and it’s being written by people like you and me. It’s big, it’s amazing and while it won’t be 100% accurate, it is still an incredible resource.

I particularly like the mission statement for Wikihow: "wikiHow is a collaborative writing project to build the world's largest how-to manual. With your contributions, we can create a free resource that helps people by offering clear, concise solutions to the problems of everyday life."

Joel Stein's Wisdom

Have something to say? I don't care

"Here's what my Internet-fearing editors have failed to understand: I don't want to talk to you; I want to talk at you. A column is not my attempt to engage in a conversation with you." -- Joel Stein

Joel Stein is a columnist for the Los Angeles Times. This quote came from his article titled: Have something to say? I don't care. The subtitle: Don't bother sending anything to that e-mail address below -- because I don't care.

25:) RSS: Ready for Some Stories?

http://www.bloglines.com
http://www.google.com/reader
Actually, RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Hmm, that sounds confusing. Here's the scoop: If you read many blogs or articles on the Internet, you might want to use a service that assists with reading all that information. By using one of the sites above, the stories/articles/information comes to you. Yep, you don't have to go to the Web sites -- they come to you. And, they only "visit" when there's new information! Now, that's really cool.

I use and recommend Bloglines, however, many people prefer Google's new service.

Brian Dirck's Wisdom

I was intrigued to see a blog about Abraham Lincoln. After all, hasn't everything that could be written about Abraham Lincoln been written? So, I asked Brian a simple question? "Why do you blog." I thought his response was profound.

“It’s a way to maintain my discipline as a scholar and a writer. If I’m blogging daily about Lincoln, then I'm thinking daily about Lincoln, and this helps me develop new ideas.”

If Lincoln Blogged

WSJ Opinion Column Wisdom

Blogs; An alternate view:

"The blogs are not as significant as their self-endeared curators would like to think. Journalism requires journalists, who are at least fitfully confronting the digital age. The bloggers, for their part, produce minimal reportage. Instead, they ride along with the MSM like remora fish on the bellies of sharks, picking at the scraps." -- Joseph Rago, Assistant editorial features editor at The Wall Street Journal

Wall Street Journal, December 20, 2006

On December 29, 2006, The Wall Street Journal printed my response (the unedited version):

Mr. Rago appears to be as narrow-minded as the people he attempts to malign. It appears that his article refers to political bloggers, however, with a broad stroke, he lumps all blogs into one huge ocean. Based on the blog search engine, Technorati, there are over 55-million blogs. No doubt, in that large school of fish, you will find many meaningless missives. However, if only one-percent are of any value, that means that there are more than 550,000 valuable, interesting and informative opinions.

Of course, none of us could ever consume all that information. So, people who are in the blogosphere, through various means, identify the blogs that are significant to them. And for those who have not dipped their toe into the blog water, the world of blogs addresses every interest. As an author who writes about the Internet, I tell people that good bloggers have two characteristics: They are passionate and are experts. With that in mind, the reader will gain much knowledge by subscribing to those blogs."

87:) Searching for Videos

http://www.purevideo.com
http://www.blinkx.tv
These video search engines will find the video of your choice.

Here's what makes online video so compelling: Just remember this acronym -- TOES

  • Time - Online video breaks two television paradigms: Online video can be 4-seconds or 4-hours in length. It doesn't have to fit into neatly packaged 30 to 60-minute segments. It also operates 24/7: No repeats!
  • On-Demand - While everyone raves about their TiVo/DVR, functionally, those technologies are obsolete. There's a severe disk capacity limitation. Um, the Internet's disk capacity is infinite.
  • Embed - "Good" online videos go viral and can easily be embedded into anyone's Web site.
  • Searchable - Online video is searchable. So, if I want a song by Bruce Hornsby, I just search for it!
TOES cannot and will not be provided by television. That's why online video is compelling.

Bonus video #1 and #2: Seinfeld and Superman
